Project Partner Spotlight: BMW Group Steyr Plant

20. May 2026
The BMW Group’s Steyr plant in Upper Austria is the BMW Group’s largest engine plant worldwide and employs more than 4,700 people. The facility produces over 1.2 million gasoline, diesel, and electric engines annually. In addition, Steyr serves as a major development center for new powertrain technologies, thermal management for all-electric vehicles, and the industrialization of hydrogen fuel cell systems for future series production.

Project Partner Spotlight: BMW Group Steyr Plant

In the Additive for Mobility (A4M) project, DI Stefan Steinacher serves as project manager and acts as the central point of contact for project-related activities. BMW brings extensive expertise in industrial manufacturing and the development of modern powertrain systems to the consortium.

A key focus of the project is the automated repair of defects in highly complex electric motor housings. Currently, exposed cavities and pores on functionally critical surfaces are manually reworked using laser welding followed by grinding processes. As part of A4M, work is underway to automate this process through the use of WAAM technologies and precise laser machining.

The goal is to make the existing manual repair process more efficient and reproducible, reduce scrap, and significantly lower time and cost expenditures. By combining additive manufacturing technologies with automated post-processing, the project aims to develop robust and scalable solutions for industrial applications.
